Days present and days absent
Most permanent residence and naturalisation routes count two things: total time resident, and time spent away during it. Enter your start date, the milestone you need, and your trips out of the country.

This tool counts both the day you leave and the day you return as days absent. Many places count more generously and treat both as days present. Check how the country you are applying to counts.
Four things this number does not tell you
- A single absence that runs too long can reset the clock. Many places treat total days away and the length of one single absence as separate limits — breaching the single-absence limit can break continuity even when the total is still fine. That is why the longest absence is shown on its own.
- Not every kind of residence permit counts. Some count in full, some count only partly, some not at all. Time spent as a student is the most common case.
- Other conditions have nothing to do with day counts. Language, income, insurance, criminal record, a knowledge test — having the days is not enough if any of these is missing.
- The requirement can change while you are still accumulating. Both the number of years and the way they are counted can be amended, and the rules in force when you apply usually govern, not the ones in force when you started.
